Smith Road sidewalk gets a ‘no’ after FMPC vote

The Farragut Municipal Planning Commission did not approve the construction of a proposed sidewalk along Smith Road at the July 7 meeting.

Darryl Smith, town engineer, said the sidewalk project should include a symmetrical widening of the road and the current proposal only called for widening the north side of the road.

“Might as well do it while you’re in there, do it one time,” he said.

However, Smith added that money is not currently in the budget or in future budgets to finish the project.

Farragut Mayor W. Edward Ford III said if the project was not approved, he would suggest shifting “the consensus to the Old Stage Road project because we would like to see a sidewalk project completed this fiscal year.”

While the commissioners voted 5-4 against the sidewalk on Smith Road, Ford and Commissioner Joel Garber, an alderman, said they would like to see the project done in the future when funds are available.

“We have to wait ’till we get the big money to do a big project,” Ford said.

Voting on the Aquatic Buffer Zone Ordinance and the Stormwater Ordinance were also on the agenda; however, the commissioners unanimously agreed to defer voting on both ordinances to the July 21 meeting so the commissioners could look at a “clean copy,” Ford said.

The commissioners discussed language changes to the aquatic buffer and stormwater ordinances for more than two hours before voting to defer the votes to the next regularly scheduled meeting.

In other business by the FMPC:

• the commissioners unanimously approved a preliminary plat for Inverness - unit 5, parcel 21.06 and a portion of parcel 21, Tax Map 153, 10.21 acres, zoned R-2 and R-3, 30 lots.

• the commissioners unanimously approved a preliminary plat for Inverness - unit 6, parcel 21.06 and a portion of parcel 21, Tax Map 153, 24.94 acres, zoned R-2, 46 lots.

• the commissioners unanimously approved a plat of correction, 11806 Brookline Point, zoned R-2, .5 acres, to change a platted drainage easement .

• the commissioners unanimously approved a site plan for grading on parcel 110.08, Tax Map 130, located on the south side of Snyder Road west of US Golf, zoned C-2, 6.8 acres.

In discussions, the commission workshopped a request to rezone 11235 West Point Drive, parcel 5, Tax Map 143HE, 1.13 acres, from C-1 to O-1.

The commissioners did not discuss an amendment to the text of the Farragut Zoning Ordinance, Chapter 3, to create a Neighborhood Commercial District so the meeting could adjourn at 11:30 p.m.
