Second Harvest sets record

Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee released the results recently from its fiscal year ending June 30.

An unprecedented 8.1 million pounds of food were distributed to more than 300 non-profit hunger-relief agencies in an 18-county service area during the past year. Last year, Second Harvest distributed 6.8 million pounds of food, which was then its record-breaker.

“Never before have the hungry in East Tennessee had access to so much food,” Executive Director Elaine Machiela said. “We are thrilled that we have been able to help this donated food find its way onto the tables of our community’s needy.”

Second Harvest is not resting on this success. “Our goal is to raise even more food this year and do everything we can to alleviate hunger in our area,” said Machiela. Second Harvest estimates that 18 to 20 million pounds of food would need to be donated to alleviate hunger in the area.
