’Dawgs rocked by CHS

A steady passing attack and a heavy dose of David Gaston led to the 55-28 dismantling of the Bearden Bulldogs Friday, Sept. 23, by the state’s No. 2 Class 4A Bobcats at Central High School.

The senior runningback had 188 yards on 13 carries, including four touchdowns in the first half to lead the Bobcats into halftime with a 55-0 lead.

“They came out ready to play,” BHS head coach Paul Maynard said. “They have a fantastic ball club; they are a lot more physical than what we anticipated. They came out ready to go from the get-go playing ball and we started out in one of our lulls ... .

“The speed [of Gaston] we just couldn’t simulate it this past week,” Maynard added. “He ran relentless, he ran with authority and we haven’t faced a running back of his caliber at this point so we had some problems with him. And then we had some breakdowns in the secondary.”

Central quarterback Zach Helton threw touchdown passes of 24 and 59 yards to Kenny Cruze. The senior was 4-of-8 passing for 153 yards and added a 7-yard touchdown run.

Turnovers were a key for Central (5-0) as the Bulldogs (2-4) fumbled five times, losing three.

Bearden got on the scoreboard for the first time late in the third quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by Brandon Pemberton. He scored again with 7:37 left in the fourth quarter on a two-yard run.

On Central’s next drive, Jordan Maynard returned a Bobcat fumble 40 yards for a touchdown.

After Matt Reagan recovered his own onside kick, the Bulldogs marched 44 yards for the score when Torey Works ran for an 18-yard score.

Bearden hosts Region 1-5A rival Science Hill beginning at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 30.
