‘Experienced’ BHS baseball team has 33 out for Fall-Ball season

With a team he labels “experienced,” Bearden High School baseball varsity head coach Matt Buckner reports 33 Diamond ’Dawgs out for Fall-Ball 2005.

Although losing only one standout everyday player — Ole Miss signee and former BHS catcher Brett Basham — from last season’s 26-9-1 team, Buckner said his 2005-06 Bulldogs have “a long way to go ... we’ve got a lot of work to do.” However, “I’m definitely optimistic.

“Obviously with the rules the way they are, we focus all our attention on pitchers,” Buckner added about a staff losing only one arm to graduation last spring. “Get better on the mound, develop some young arms and smooth some things out. Try to develop some arm strength. ...”

With parents coaching both of his varsity “split-squad” teams — about 11 players on each — in addition to his junior varsity team, Buckner’s Bulldogs have played in various fall tournaments, including one they hosted at Phil Garner Field around Labor Day.

A tournament at William Blount and Heritage high schools this weekend will feature an “eight-, nine-, ten-team tournament,” Buckner said.

Bearden’s Fall-Ball runs from the latter portion of August until the first week of October.
