No state repeat for FHS girls
Golf team finishes tied for second-place in state tourney match

MURFREESBORO — Farragut failed to repeat as Class AAA state golf champions last week, but head coach Mike Driver said he was pleased with his team’s performance after a second-place finish.

“I thought they played real well, we all played solid both rounds,” Driver said about his team’s two-day, 36-hole total of 299 at Old Fort Golf Course Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 11-12.

Farragut tied Jefferson County for second-place, six strokes behind champion Independence High School of Franklin.

“I’m sure there are strokes we could have saved and putts we could have made,” Driver said.

The Lady Admirals’ two top scorers were junior Erika Thornton’s 150, giving her a 10th-place individual finish, and sophomore Alyssa Randolph’s 151 gave her 11th-place.

Junior Jillian Brodd (152) tied for 12th.

“I was real happy with our performance, especially the second day, we had to make up some strokes on Jefferson County and we did,” Driver said.

“Independence just played real well.”

Bearden individual state qualifier Emily Sills shot 159.

Admiral junior John Minor Jr., the only boys FHS golfer to qualify for state, shot 154 and finished “in the middle of the pack,” Driver said, which was 17 strokes behind champion Hunter Green of Rhea County.
