Soccer season ends well short of state tourney for Bearden
No. 6 Lady SoccerDawgs dumped by No. 1 Oak Ridge in region semis

OAK RIDGE ó A season full of state championship capabilities ended abruptly at the hands of Oak Ridge High School Tuesday Oct. 18.

The stateís No. 1-ranked Class AAA Lady Wildcats defeated the No. 10-ranked Bearden Lady SoccerDawgs 4-1 in a Region 2-AAA semifinal, eventually landing ORHS in the state tournament in Chattanooga this week.

"Not advancing past this game is obviously disappointing but as a whole I thought we had a great year, the girls really stepped up," BHS head coach Eric Turner said. "We just didnít achieve our ultimate goal which was making state and winning a championship."

Bearden, the District 4-AAA regular season champion, finishes its season 15-5-1.

The Lady Wildcats got things started with a goal from Trenna Howell three minutes into play.

"The fast start was key to the game, we knew they wanted to come out and score early to take the pressure off themselves and that's exactly what they did," Turner said. "We didnít come out with the intensity we needed and that put us in a big hole and forced us to kind of hang our defense out for the rest of the game trying to tie it up."

Nearly two minutes later, Britta Byrne scored. At the 18th minute, Howell connected on a penalty shot to make it 3-0 Lady Wildcats.

Mary Alex Rochester provided the only goal for the Lady SoccerDawgs seven minutes into the second half to cut their deficit to two goals.

Despite the loss, Turner is pleased with the 2005 season. "We had the season we thought we would have," Turner said. "We won a lot of games and we were very competitive except unfortunately you get judged by how you do at the end of the season."

Bearden seniors finishing their careers are Sarah Himmelreich, Meredith Kelly, Brooke Levy, Brittany Hutchens, Pua Coffman, Becca Graves, Janie Dance, Julie Koch and Sarah Bumpas.
