Unbeaten Ice Dawgs point to Mt. Juliet

Bearden’s Ben Jardet was pretty good in white Thursday night.

“I’ve had some bad luck in the white jersey in the past, I’ve usually been going good in the maroon,” Jardet said following his four goals in an 8-1 BHS Ice Dawgs hockey win versus the Warriors Dec. 15 at the Icearium, running Bearden’s perfect record to 6-0. “But the white is going to kick in.”

BHS head coach John Cox said Jardet, a junior, “is our points leader, he’s been our points leader for two years. He’s a great player, got great hands. He had a great game.”

Next up for Bearden is Mt Juliet — one of the top high school hockey programs in Tennessee — for a doubleheader Wednesday, Dec. 28, in Nashville.

“We’re going to take it to Mount Juliet on the twenty-eighth,” Jardet said. “And we’re going to take it to ’em out there in Nashville. It’s going to be great. We’re ready for ’em.”

Cox said, “They’re supposed to be one of the top teams in Nashville, so we’re kinda anxious to go down and play and see how it goes.”

Against the Warriors, Andrew Nickels added a hat trick (three goals). “Andrew and Ben are on the same line, they work well very together along with Jeff Slack,” Cox said. “Andrew’s come a long way the last two years, he’s playing great.”

Sean Verlinde scored Bearden’s final goal on an unassisted breakaway with 1:59 left in the game.

As for other BHS standouts so far this season, “[Logan ] Baker in goal is having a great year,” Cox said. “All of our freshmen. Chad Miracle’s doing great. Daane Blocksma’s playing center, he’s doing great. I could name the whole roster because the kids are all working hard. It’s a great locker room, they get along together well.”

Nickels and Chris Bates each had two assists while Hunter McLees and Grady Woodruff added one apiece.

Other BHS team members are Evan Rogers, Chris Bates, Hunter McLees, Stephen Holbrook, Adam Bates, Steven Cohen, Kevin Elkins, Michael Harrison, Grady Woodruff, Sean Verlinde, Justin Rateau, Michael Vekasi, Matt Woodruff and Jay Cox.
