Another year has slipped by as 2005 will soon be “last year” and 2006 will be the present.

With the new year, it is our hope that Knox County government will continue to move forward at the pace that was set in 2005.

Much progress was made in 2005, especially with the ground-breaking for a new high school in West Knox County. Still, many issues — such as how large will the school be, how much will the final cost of the school total and will the school be large enough to ease overcrowding in the county — remain unresolved.

An election is brewing and from the looks of things there appears to be either much apathy toward public service or the status quo is adequate for the citizens, as many incumbents are running unopposed and some positions have no takers. It’s still early, though.

Regardless, let us all hope that whomever is elected to lead us in 2006 will keep the best interest of the citizen/taxpayer in mind.
