Bearden hoop girls slip by ACHS for lone Super 16 tourney victory

The Bearden Lady Bulldogs earned fifth-place at the annual Super 16 tournament with a 51-45 victory over Anderson County Wednesday, Dec. 28, at BHS.

Junior point guard Allysia Bailey led all scorers with 19 points as Bearden bounced back from back-to-back losses the previous day to Karns and McMinn Central and improved its overall record to 6-7 entering the week.

A lot of games in a short amount of time, combined with the absence of leading scorer Sarah Himmelreich — who was away in Florida at a soccer tournament — proved to be tiring for the Lady Bulldogs.

However, “Jenna Maynard stepped up and played quality minutes both offensively and defensively and Amity Mulvey and Adalyia Parker did a nice job for us,” BHS head coach Nathan Hodges said. Others BHS scorers were Rikki Sanders with 10, Mary Hirst nine, Maynard six, Kristen Osterman three, and Mulvey and Tymier Williams two apiece.

In the McMinn Central game, the Lady Bulldogs couldn’t notch a victory despite a strong performance by Bailey, who scored 21, as BHS lost 57-49 Tuesday, Dec. 27.

Hirst added 10 points, Maynard eight, and Mulvey, Osterman and Sanders had three apiece. Sarah Canter rounded out the scoring with two.

In the opening game Tuesday, Bearden lost to Karns 43-40. “I thought we played pretty well defensively but it wasn’t our day,” Hodges said. Hirst led BHS with 10 points, Sanders had nine, Mulvey eight, Maynard six, Bailey four, Osterman two and Parker one.

Overall, “Allysia Bailey played really well,” Hodges said. “She had a rough game against Karns. ... “As far as running the team she has gotten better all year. I’m just glad she is only a junior.”
