Ice Dawgs, Mt Juliet split

NASHVILLE — It was a split for the Bearden Ice Dawgs following their doubleheader versus perennial high school state hockey power Mt. Juliet in Centennial Sportsplex Wednesday, Dec. 28.

Led by Ben Jardet’s hat trick (three goals), Bearden won the early afternoon game, 4-1. Andrew Nickels had an empty-netter in the last minute of the game, set up by what BHS head coach John Cox said was an “outstanding defensive play and big hit at the blue line” by Grady Woodruff.

Nickels and Daane Blocksma each had an assist. BHS goalie Logan Baker had 24 saves, as the Ice Dawgs record stands at 6-1 and unbeaten in Knoxville Area Hockey Association play.

Despite Nickels’ hat trick and Jardet’s three assists, Mt Juliet won the evening game 5-3. Jeff Slack had one assist in game two.

After ending the first period tied 1-1, Nickels put Bearden ahead 2-1 just 17 seconds into the second period. Mt Juliet (8-2 record) answered with two goals before Nickels tied the game at 3-3 with only 41 seconds left in the second.

The host team netted the winning goal with 2:54 left and added an empty net goal in the final minute. Baker had 27 saves.
