• Come and watch the Knoxville Catholic High School Fighting Irish girls’ and boys’ basketball teams battle Christian Academy of Knoxville Friday, Jan. 13, and enjoy a chili supper. The supper runs from 5 to 8:30 p.m., with proceeds benefiting KCHS’s baseball program. Chili, warm slab of cornbread, drink and homemade cookies or brownies cost $5 for adults and $3 for children 11-and-under.

• The Bearden Baseball Dugout Club is sponsoring a barbecue dinner prior to the Bearden versus Farragut varsity basketball games Friday, Jan. 20, at BHS. The dinner runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria and will include barbecue with or without bun, coleslaw, chips, beans, potato salad and drink. Dine in or carry out. There will also be a baked goods sale. Cost is $6 each or $20 for a family of four. Tickets may be purchased in advance from any Bearden baseball player, coach or parent, and will also be available at the door. Checks should be made out to Bearden Baseball Dugout Club. To purchase tickets, call BHS varsity head coach Matt Buckner at 865-368-3141.

• The YWCA of Knoxville and Blount County will conduct the 2006 Race Against Racism Saturday, Jan. 21. Registration begins at 12:30 pm. at Maynard Elementary School on College Street near Western Avenue, and the 5K and 1 Mile walk begins at 2 p.m. following a race course through the Mechanicsville Commons neighborhood. A $20 entry fee received by Friday, Jan. 13, provides each participant with a long-sleeve T-shirt, refreshments and entertainment courtesy of local groups. The fee is $25 after Jan. 13 and T-shirts will be provided while supplies last.
