Dawgs keep on rolling

The Bearden Bulldogs shrugged off a valiant effort by the South-Doyle Cherokees and rolled to a 77-67 win Friday, Jan. 13, at SDHS.

Rande Sibley scored 30 points for the Bulldogs and Tony White Jr. scored 26 as Bearden improved its overall record to 22-1 and 6-1 in District 4-AAA entering the week.

“[South-Doyle] always plays us hard but everybody plays us hard,” BHS head coach Mark Blevins said. “Rande really had a great game tonight; he was the guy that opened up the press offense for us.”

Sibley connected on 7 of 13 from 3-point range and 5 of 5 from the line for Bearden. “I just tried to come out here and play and contribute to the team,” Sibley said. “I was hot so I tried to get the ball and shoot as many as I could.”

After holding on to a one-point lead to end the first quarter the Bulldogs increased its lead to 41-31 at halftime and managed to hold onto the lead the rest of the way. “As a team we just tried to come out here and execute,” Sibley said.

White continued to play solid basketball, scoring 15 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter while contributing six assists and five defensive rebounds.

In addition to White and Sibley, Thomas Wiley and B.J. Ware also pleased the coach.

“Thomas Wiley is starting to come into his own now,” Blevins said. “B.J. played point guard ninety percent of the time, which allowed Tony to rest a little bit. We are trying to get him ready because at the next level that’s the position he is going to be playing.”

Wiley scored eight points, going 3 of 4 from the field and 2 of 2 from the line. On the defensive side he had two steals and four rebounds.

Ware scored four points, grabbed 10 rebounds, three steals and dished out two assists.

Others scoring for Bearden were senior Kalin Garner with five points and freshman Damonte Simpson with four.
