Second-half rallies, defense push FHS boys to pair of wins

Leading only one time the entire game until late in the third quarter, the Farragut Admirals rallied against South Doyle, held a small lead throughout the fourth frame and pulled away at the end for a 46-37 win Friday, Jan. 27, at SDHS.

Trailing 13-9 after one quarter and 19-18 at the half, the Admirals got a boost from its bench. Riley Hunley, backup point guard, hit a lay-up and three-point basket to go with a Will Akers jumper, completing a 7-0 run for a 30-28 FHS lead with 1:34 left in the third quarter. The Ads would never trail again.

“Riley gave us a big lift,” FHS head coach Donald Dodgen said. “The fourth quarter, our bench came in and gave us a big lift. We made the run when we needed to make the run. Our defense created a lot of our offense.”

No Admiral scored in double figures, as B.J. Browning and Akers led the Ads with nine each. Marcus Huie added eight, Phil Kinney seven and Zach Onusic six points. Following Hunley’s five points was Tyler Powell’s two.

“In the third quarter we came out and connected on both ends, offensively and defensively,” Browning said.

Coupled with a 66-59 victory against Sevier County, Tuesday, Jan. 24, the Ads enter the week 12-10 overall, 7-4 in District 4-AAA.

Down by as many as 10 points against the Smoky Bears, “I thought our defense was just outstanding. Mason Burks, B.J. Browning, Marcus Huie and Phil Kinney all played very, very well. B.J. had a big three and two big steals,” Dodgen said of a 24-9 run.

Browning, who ended with four three-pointers, was among four Ads in double figures, leading the way with 18 points. Huie added 16, with Kinney 12 and Onusic 11.
