Donald lands with Vancouver

Demetrius Donald, former Bearden High School and Queens University star, was the second pick of the Vancouver Whitecaps in the 2006 United Soccer Leagues First Division College Draft.

Becoming the league’s 22nd overall pick, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound Donald was named to the NSCAA/Adidas NCAA Division II All-American Team in 2005 for the Charlotte, N.C., college after being named Carolinas Virginia Athletic Conference Player of the Year. He was also named first-team All-Conference in 2004 and 2005, and the first-team All-Southeast Region in 2005.

“We’re excited about drafting Donald. He’s a versatile midfielder who can also play up front. He adds a strong physical presence and is not afraid to attack the box out of midfield,” said Bob Lenarduzzi, Vancouver director of soccer operations. The Whitecaps’ regular season starts April 22.

The 22-year-old helped lead the SoccerDawgs to the 2002 national championship and back-to-back Class AAA state titles in 2001 and 2002.
