Ice Dawgs clinch title
Late goal edges FHS 2-1

Just moments after a two-man advantage almost turned disasterous for Bearden, the Ice Dawgs broke a 1-1 with archrival Farragut and clinched the Knox County championship.

An Andrew Nickels goal with 1:45 left in the game, assisted by Ben Jardet, gave BHS a 2-1 victory while keeping its unbeaten league record intact (11-0, 12-1 overall). FHS dropped to 6-5.

“We’ve talked all year about finishing strong and winning the city championship, and that game clinched the city championship and we’re real excited about that,” BHS head coach John Cox said. “I’m real proud of the boys.”

During Bearden’s two-man advantage, Farragut’s Jake Lanigan had a breakaway attempt stopped by BHS goalie Logan Baker.

“Logan Baker had a tremendous save ... and that sort of set us up for the go-ahead goal,” Cox said.

First period goals by Farragut’s John Wilson, assisted by Adam Lanigan and Mike Krahl, and by Bearden’s Daane Blocksma, assisted by Stephen Holbrook, left the issue at 1-1 going down the to the final minutes.
