Ads avenge loss, crush LCHS to build six-game win streak

Donald Dodgen said his Farragut High School basketball team is living up to his prediction of about three months ago:

“Give us some time, and this team will surprise some people,” the Ad skipper recalled following the Admirals’ sixth-straight victory, a 76-44 revenge drubbing of Lenoir City Friday in FHS’s Lynn E. Sexton Gymnasium.

“They’re focused, they’re working hard, and it seems like somebody always picks us up,” Dodgen said.

Entering the final two regular season games Monday and Tuesday (after press deadline), with the District 4-AAA tourney starting Saturday at FHS, the Ads are the third seed, finishing 10-4 in the district, and were 16-10 overall entering the week. (See bracket story, page 15).

With six three-point baskets from senior B.J. Browning, including three withing a two-minute span that ignited a 30-3 Admiral run late in the third quarter into the fourth, the 6-foot-1 wing ended with a game-high 24 points against LCHS.

“He was hot as all get-out,” Dodgen said of Browning.

Scott Carroll, who said he’s back to “about ninety percent” after suffering a stress fracture to his foot, scored 13 points and raked down a team-leading 10 rebounds.

However, Dodgen said at the beginning of the game, “We were dragging a little bit, then the bench came in and gave us a big lift.” That sparked a 17-0 run for a 17-4 first quarter lead. “Tyler Powell had a big bucket” in that run.

Other FHS scorers were Will Akers with eight, Marcus Huie and Jeff Jameson seven each, Powell six, Esean Phillips five, Riley Hunley four and Phil Kinney two points.

Huie, the team’s only returning starter from last season, said his teammates are leaning on him.

“Scott told me, ‘you gotta carry the team. ... You gotta lift us up, you’re the energy of the team,’” Huie said about Carroll.

“Team-wise, we’re playing together ... that’s one reason we’re on a six-game winning streak.”
