• Parents of kindergartners through second-graders have an opportunity to get their kids out in the fresh air. All area girls and boys can play baseball in the Blue Grass league, which goes back about 35 years. Rocky King, league commissioner, said the league doesn’t keep score and no child ever strikes out. The teams practice and play games at Blue Grass Elementary during the school week. Teams are mixed by gender and grade level. King estimated the league typically has about 80 kids, with 10 per team. King said kids from Blue Grass and A. L. Lotts elementaries make up most of the league, but children from other schools, and homeschoolers, are welcome to sign up though the end of February. Parents can pick up a registration form at either school office, or they can contact King at 865-690-3551 or 865-546-0500. Cost is $60, which covers cap and jersey, an end-of-season celebration and a trophy. Practice begins in mid-March, with the season running from Monday, April 10, through Thursday, May 25.

• Concord Hills Recreation Association announces the hiring of Lauren Hancock as new head coach of the Concord Hills Swim Team. She moved to Knoxville recently to attend graduate school at the University of Tennessee. Named South Carolina’s Swimmer of the Year in 1999, Hancock’s coaching experience includes one year as recruiting coordinator/assistant coach at Duke and head coach of the Fields Swim Team, Norcross, Ga, the largest swim team in Gwinnett County.
