Farragut ousted in championship; Bearden claims third place


The No. 3-seed Farragut Admirals were defeated by No. 4 Maryville 56-53 in the District 4-AAA championship Friday, Feb. 24 at Lynn E. Sexton Gymnasium.

Will Akers led the Admirals (20-11) with 14 points and B.J. Browning added 12 as the Admirals were unable to hold onto a 50-49 lead with 1:05 remaining. Farragut will play Oak Ridge Tuesday, Feb. 28 in the first round of the Region 2-AAA tournament at Sevier County High School. Meanwhile, the top seeded Bearden Bulldogs claimed third place by beating No. 2 William Blount 59-49 in the consolation game. Freshman post Damonte Simpson led the state's No. 6-ranked Bearden with 16 points and seven rebounds as the Bulldogs (30-4) became the third team in school history to win 30 games. Tony White Jr. had 15 points and B.J. Ware added 12.
