FMS girls upset Vine, 2nd in tourney

The Farragut Middle School Lady Admirals upset No. 1 and previously unbeaten Vine, 37-35, in the semifinals of the Knox County Middle School League Basketball Tournament and finished second.

No. 4 seed Farragut, which finishes the season with a 20-5 record, led 22-10 at the half and 28-23 going into the fourth quarter before Vine rallied.

But FMS got steals by Katie Cargo and Alex Newby that led to a free throw by A. Newby and two by Mira Neely to overcome a Vine lead and tie the contest 35-35 entering the game’s final minute.

Shaelyn Brown’s short jumper with 13 seconds left gave Farragut the lead, 37-35, then a steal by Stephanie Harris allowed the Lady Admirals to run out the clock and secure the upset victory.

Brown led Farragut in scoring with 14 points and three assists. Harris added 13 points and 14 rebounds and Hayley Newby grabbed nine rebounds and scored two points.

Alex Newby and Cargo scored three points each, with A. Newby adding eight assists Cargo providing five. Neely worked through an injured hand and raked down seven rebounds. Overall, the Lady Admirals out-rebounded Vine 36-22.
