Lady Ads win program's first-ever region title

SEVIERVILLE -- One night after earning the program's first sub-state berth in 24 years, the Farragut Lady Admiral basketball team grabbed the program's first-even region title.

Defense, clutch free throw shooting and a huge steal added up to a 50-46 Lady Admiral victory against Powell in the Region 2-AAA championship game Thursday, Feb. 23, at Sevier County High School.

Four free throws in the game's final minute, two each from Beth Raby and Stephanie Torrence, allowed FHS to hang on and improve its record to 26-8 entering Saturday's sub-state game, which Farragut will host in Lynn E. Sexton Gymnasium versus Region 1-AAA runner-up Greeneville.

Torrence, only a freshman, stole the ball near mid-court and was fouled after Powell rebounded a missed free throw and was racing upcourt with 12 seconds to play, trailing 48-46.

Fouled after the steal, Torrence sank both of her free throws with five seconds remaining to seal the game. The freshman guard led all Lady Ad scorers with 13 points.

Senior post Catelyn Dake, tournament MVP, was next with 12 points. Raby, who joined Rachel Draper and Dake on the All-tourney team, added nine, followed by Draper with eight.

Draper and Kiah Simmons, who scored five, combined for five points midway into the fourth quarter to break a 41-41 tie and give Farragut a 46-41 lead with 3:30 to play.

C.J. Dake scored two for the Lady Ads, while Kara Beth Beverly had one point.

Powell post Caitlin Hollifield led her team with 15 points, followed by Alana Michael's 12 points.
