Rebuilding time for FHS soccer boys

Instead of pointing toward another Class AAA state title in boys soccer, Farragut head coach Wallie Culbreth said he isn’t thinking nearly that far ahead in 2006.

“Our goal is the next game,” Culbreth said, adding that it’s “definitely a rebuilding year” for the program that has won two of the last three Class AAA state titles plus a share of the 2004 national crown. “I’m definitely going to miss some real valuable seniors that I lost [after] last year.

“But I think as the season goes on we’ll get progressively better,” he added. “I think we’ll be doing a lot better at the end of the season.”

Several proven Ads return.

Senior goalkeeper Tony Milazzo was in goal two years ago when FHS won the state title and share of the national championship.

Culbreth said senior midfielders Ben Lawson and Matthew Dakin “understand what I expect,” adding that junior outside midfielders Tyler Swift and Robert Fisher have “really done a good job, really been a pleasant surprise so far.”

Senior midfielder Ben Contessa returns to the team this season and will provide needed depth. “I’m glad to have him back,” Culbreth said.

The FHS skipper calls junior forwards Ben Backstrom and Jake Russell “outstanding.”

Aside from Milazzo, the defense is loaded with inexperienced faces according to Culbreth. But the coach is optimistic.

Featuring juniors Nic Paolucci and Dylan Whitman and sophomores Tyler Mottern, Joseph Muth, Aaron Stinton and Mitchell Ishmael, “My defense is young, but I’ve got some really good defenders, so I’m hoping [for] good things out of them,” he said. “I think this defense potentially has the ability to shut most teams down.”

As a group, “they work well together, they’re understanding the system that we’re asking them [to play],” Culbreth said.

Culbreth labels “team chemistry” as the Admirals’ biggest strength. “They’re really reaching out to support each other.”

Other players looking to contribute are Will Beuerlein, Travis Bolton, Jonathon Chancey, David Creswell, Adam Greene, Josh Grossbard, Pedi Hashemian, Jake Holt, Kevin Underwood and Alex Ventura.

Assistant coaches are Derek Wright and Bradley Culbreth. Manager is Brooke Culbreth.
