Blevins’ girls rebound, win 2

After a 1-5 overall record entering the week, the Bearden Lady Bulldogs softball team was looking to turn its season around in a hurry.

With a little hard work in practice, Bearden head coach Mark Blevins feels that his team may have turned the corner as the Lady Bulldogs took two of three District 4-AAA games in the week by earning wins against Lenoir City and South Doyle.

“We are getting a lot of practice,” Blevins said. “We put in a couple [of] four-hour practices the last couple [of] Wednesdays and worked out hard on Friday trying to get more of the system in.”

After the Monday, April 3, loss to Heritage 8-2, the Lady Bulldogs (4-6 overall record and 3-4 in District 4-AAA entering the week) knew that they had to make adjustments.

Bearden bounced back against Lenoir City Wednesday, April 5, to earn the 9-2 win.

Junior Rachel Rowan pitched a complete game to get the win on the mound.

The BHS offense started slow when eight of their first nine batters struck out, but after that the runs started to pile up. Senior Amanda McCollum was 3 of 3 at the plate, including a double. Senior catcher Paige Harmony had a double and four RBIs.

Sophomore Ebony Reddic had three hits and Kelly Callaway had a double and two RBIs.

The offense continued to get the job done for the Lady Bulldogs against South-Doyle Thursday, April 6, winning 7-5.

With the score notched at 5-5 going into the fourth-inning, BHS scored two in the bottom of the inning to grab the lead for good.

Freshman Alex Boris, who came on in the fourth-inning for Rowan, earned the win by pitching scoreless ball the final three innings.

McCollum and Amber Allen doubled to pace the Bearden offense.

“We came up with three runs in the bottom of the first which gave us a little bit of spirit there,” Blevins said. “We had been trying to not get shutout in any inning, so that really helped us.”
