Top South Carolina teams fall as soccer Ads 2nd in tourney

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A late rally to clip Hilton Head, S.C., in the semifinals proved to be the highlight of Farragut’s boys soccer excursion to South Carolina last week, as the Ads finished second among a 16-team field versus many of the Palmetto State’s best teams.

Hilton Head was one of three highly-ranked South Carolina teams FHS whipped during the Palmetto Cup April 12-15.

Kevin Underwood redirected a free kick from Mitchell Ishmael with less than two minutes to play in the game against Hilton Head that pulled the Ads even, 2-2.

Jake Russell’s unassisted goal in the first five-minute overtime was the eventual game-winner.

Joseph Muth scored Farragut’s first goal, assisted by Matt Dakin.

Despite being hammered by Northwest (Rock Hill, S.C.) 10-1 in Saturday’s title match, the Ads carried a 8-2-5 record into this week’s action, which ends with a visit from archrival Bearden Friday. Opening kick is 7:30 p.m. at Bill Clabo Field.

Farragut opened with a 3-2 win against Spring Valley, S.C., ranked No. 5 in the state in Class 4-A. After two first-half goals from Muth, Russell broke a 2-2 tie with a second-half goal. Matt Dakin and Josh Grossbard assisted.

Goals by Russell, Ben Backstrom and Muth pushed the Ads past Riverside, S.C., 3-1 Thursday, April 13. Assists came from Russell, Backstrom and Robert Fisher.

Against Wando, S.C., Farragut earned a 1-1 tie Friday with a second-half goal by Ben Backstrom, assisted by Russell.
