BHS track boys win ‘Big East’
Lady Bulldogs take 2nd


With 10 first-place finishes, the Bearden boys track and field team won the Big East Championship Thursday, April 13, at Jefferson County High School by 54 points (170 to 116 for runner-up Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett) among a six-team field.

Meanwhile, the BHS girls were second to Science Hill (155 to 140) after winning seven events.

Other schools participating were Karns, Campbell County and JCHS.

On the boys’ side, Nathan Grace won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races, and was part of the BHS 4 X 400 champs.

Jay Oatts won the 110-hurdles, 300-hurdles and was part of the 4 X 100 and 4 X 400 champs. Eric Pickle was champ in both the discus and shot put.

Champions among the Lady Bulldogs included Mary Hirst’s first-place effort in the high jump, 300-hurdles and 100-hurdles. Sarah Himmelreich was shot put champ, and Sarah Canter took first-place in the discus.

Relay-wise, Bearden was first in both the 4 X 100 and 4 X 200.

Second-place girls were Taylor Rotella in the shot put and Molly Arwood in the pole vault.

Runners-up among the boys were Andrew Shankles in the 1600, Adam Canter in both the shot put and discus, and the 4 X 800 relay team.
