Two wins for ’Dawgs in classic

The Bearden Bulldogs Baseball team capped off a busy week by going 2-2 in the Rebel Classic held in Franklin County April 14-15.

Entering the week with a 19-7 overall record and 5-3 in District 4-AAA, Bearden opened the classic with an 11-7 loss to Friendship Christian Friday, April 14. Andy Fennell was charged with the loss.

Later that night the ’Dawgs beat Tullahoma in a slugfest, 16-11.

Bearden scored nine runs in the first-inning to get on the board first, but a persistent Tullahoma offense closed the Bulldog lead to 13-11 heading to the seventh.

But three more BHS runs secured the win. Kendal Wells led the Bearden offense with two home runs and Josh Hullet got the win on the mound.

The second and final day of the tournament brought mixed results as well.

The Bulldogs opened Saturday morning with an 8-7 loss to Coffee County. Bearden couldn’t hold its 6-0 lead heading into the fourth and ended up losing in eight innings. Justin Bliss was charged with the loss.

Bearden closed out its final game of the tournament by beating Lebanon 13-3. After an eight run second-inning, the Bulldogs cruised to an easy win. Justin Miller homered for BHS and Chris Goetze got the win on the mound.

According to Bearden head coach Matt Buckner, the key to the weekend was pitching.

“We didn’t pitch well all weekend really,” he said. “We hit the ball well and really we played good defense.

“I think we only made about three errors in the four games, we just didn’t pitch well at all.”

With seven games played in the week, “I don’t know whether we are tired right now but we probably aren’t playing our best baseball of the year right now,” Buckner said. “We’re not playing bad baseball, we just aren’t playing our best and I think we will get that done pretty soon. I think we are coming around.”

BHS 13 WEST 3

Led by Garrett Copeland’s complete game effort on the mound, Bearden defeated West Thursday, April 13, at home.

Justin Miller and Matt Scruggs homered while Wayne Miller, Roach and Taylor Gouffon doubled for Bearden.

WBHS 8 BEARDEN 4

William Blount’s four runs in the eighth did the trick as Bearden couldn’t bounce back in the latter half of the inning Wednesday, April 12. Drake Little was charged with the loss.

BHS 14 HERITAGE 7

Andy Fennell was the winning pitcher as Bearden cruised against Heritage Monday, April 10.

Roach, Jonathan Reynolds and Scruggs homered.
