As SEC leader in league hitting, Delmonico is Freshman of the Week

Tennessee Volunteer shortstop Tony Delmonico was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman Baseball Player of the Week Monday, April 17, after helping lead the Volunteers a series win versus Florida April 14-16 in Knoxville.

The former Farragut High School All-state honoree hit .500 (4-for-8) against the Gators while also boasting a team-high .636 on-base percentage.

Entering last weekend’s three-game series at Georgia, Delmonico led the SEC in batting average, .471, and on-base percentage, .542, in league play. He went 3-for-4 with a pair of bunt singles in a 2-1 triumph against UF April 15.

“There’s two things that excite me as a player; when the second-baseman’s playing back and the first baseman doesn’t move too well,” Delmonico said after the game. “When the second baseman was playing back, my eyes got big.”

Delmonico helped the Vols win two of three in Athens, Ga. versus Georgia April 21-23, going 3-of-12 with a key 11th-inning RBI single in UT’s 7-4 win Friday.

Cody Brown, Vol freshman third baseman and former Ad standout, contributed an RBI single Friday.

Meanwhile, former FHS All-state pitcher and current UT staff ace Craig Cobb (2.43 ERA, 7-1 record) pitched eight inning in a no-decision Friday, allowing just one earned run with eight hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
