Pickle, Vol Classic MVP, among ’Dawgs at region
Farragut 4 X 800 boys look to qualify for state

As the lone returning state champion from Bearden High School’s boys track and field program, Eric Pickle’s list of discus and shot put accomplishments in 2006 has continued to grow.

The Class AAA discus state champion as a junior, Pickle added to his pre-state tournament honors this season April 22 among a tough field from around the southeastern United States.

Pickle earned Most Outstanding Field Athlete at the annual Volunteer Classic April 22 at The University of Tennessee’s Tom Black Track.

The honor came after the Bulldog senior won both the discus, 154-feet-5, and shot put, 58-feet-1.25.

Jay Oatts, Bearden hurdles and sprint relay standout, matched his teammate by being named Most Outstanding Track Athlete at the Vol Classic after winning both the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (:38.29) and as a leg on the Bulldogs’ 4 X 400 relay (3:21.1). Oatts, a senior, also finished third in the 110 high hurdles.

Sprint standout Nathan Grace, another experienced Bearden senior collecting truckloads of first-place honors in 2006, won the 200( :22.4).

Overall at the Vol Classic, the BHS boys finished second.

Pickle, Oatts and Grace join other Bearden boys and girls track and field athletes, in addition to those from Farragut High School, for the Region 2-AAA meet at Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett, Friday, May 12.

Beginning this season, the top four finishers earn a state berth — up from the top two — pointing toward a trip to Murfreesboro for the state meet Thursday, May 25 and Friday, May 26.

FHS 4 X 800 BOYS

Among FHS’s best hopes for success in region is the boys’ 4 X 800 team that has included Nathan Cameron, Thomas Fraser, Jacob Gibson, Bryan Mann and Frank Streiff. They have finished on top in several multi-team meets in ’06.
