Brown provides key hits, Cobb stops Vanderbilt

Former FHS All-state pitcher Craig Cobb once again came up big as Tennessee’s staff ace, beating Vanderbilt 13-3 Friday, May 5, while retiring the first 19 Vandy batters.

Though freshman third baseman Cody Brown had been struggling at the plate in SEC games, the former Farragut standout sparked UT’s 13-run assault Friday with an two-RBI single in the second inning (three RBIs in all).

Brown followed that up Saturday with an RBI single for Tennessee’s only run through eight innings — until the Admiral alumnus began a game-turning rally.

Brown’s hot grounder to third leading off the bottom of the eighth was booted, setting off a four-run rally for a 5-3 Vol win in game one of a doubleheader.

Despite a 6-4 loss in game two, Brown was two-of-three at the plate, raising his season average to .238.

Meanwhile, Cobb went the distance to beat Vandy, improving his record to 8-2 (2.80 earned run average), allowing two earned runs, no walks, six strikeouts and five hits.
