FHS girls tennis looks for state berth today
Lady Ads face perennial power Dobyns-Bennett
Alan Sloan - Thu, May, 18, 2006
Citing depth as a huge contributing factor to the success of Farragut’s girls tennis team, head coach Betsy Sparks outlined two keys toward earning a Class AAA state tournament berth today (Thusday, May 18).
With Region 1-AAA power Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett coming to Tyson Park for a 2:30 sectional match, “We need to win number one doubles or win a singles match lower in a our line-up, say number four or number five,” Sparks said of her team, which holds a 13-2 record.
Neither of those keys were realized in a match versus KD-B earlier this season, yet Farragut lost by only one point, 4-3.
The Lady Admirals’ singles lineup, from No. 1 to No. 5, is Lauren Farlett, Whitney Noble, Sarah Godfrey, Leslie Roberge and Chelsea Delay.
Farlett, considered one of the best high school tennis players in the state, did not lose a game in winning the District 4-AAA singles crown.
Though No. 5 singles for the Lady Ads, Delay finished as 4-AAA tourney runner--up. Both girls participated in the Region 2-AAA singles tournament Monday and Tuesday, May 15-16 (after deadline). The winner of the four-player tourney earns an individual state tournament trip.
Farragut advanced to the sectional match after blanking West 5-0 Thursday, May 11.
Individually, “Leslie Roberge is really improving,” Sparks said about her No. 4 player.
