Cobb pitching, Delmonico homer help UT Vols win Carolina series

It’s not always pretty — and never overpowering — but emerging University of Tennessee staff ace Craig Cobb picked up yet another critical SEC victory on the mound last Friday.

The former Farragut High School All-state pitcher went eight innings against No. 15-nationally-ranked South Carolina, allowing four runs (three earned) and nine hits as the Volunteers edged the Gamecocks 5-4.

Cobb, 9-2 record, 2.85 earned run average, is expected to be the scheduled starter tonight (Thursday) as Alabama comes to Lindsey Nelson Stadium to begin a three-game SEC series to end the regular season.

Meanwhile, freshman shortstop Tony Delmonico’s three-run homer in the sixth-inning turned out to be huge in the Vols’ 8-7 win Saturday.

Delmonico, in the running for SEC Freshman of the Year honors, is batting .337 in 50 games — all starts at shortstop. He was 3 of 14 in the series, in which the Vols (30-21 overall, 11-15 in SEC play) won two of three games.

Freshman third baseman Cody Brown, another former FHS standout, is receiving abundant credit from local media for his defensive play at third base of late (.917 fielder percentage).

At the plate, Brown was 1 of 12 in the three-game USC series.
