Reader says ‘build schools;” no to FOP pension proposal

I have to express my alarm over the initiative by the Fraternal Order of Police to add $50 million to the Knox County budget to fund a new pension plan. I am NOT in favor of this. If we won’t raise property taxes for our school system, then we should not raise them for any other reason. Any extra money in Knox County needs to be directed straight to our school system.

I realize that the adjustment of the BEP formula will add a much-needed infusion of dollars to our schools, but is additional money only important when someone else gives it to us? If you all really believe what you say, that education is the most important thing you can do, then I think you should start providing more money from the current budget now, rather than waiting until the state sees fit to provide more.

My daughter’s school lost teaching assistants last year, my son’s middle school is losing two teachers this next year and according to the plans, his high school will be losing teachers in the next two years. How does this help our schools? How many other schools in the county will lose positions? Please, work to increase funding to the schools and vote NO to the FOP pension plan changes.
