Cheek likes Rocky Mountain school

Saying he’s following a Christian calling, Farragut senior pitcher Lawson Cheek is headed to Rocky Mountain Country, signing National Letter of Intent papers with Colorado Christian University, an NCAA Division II school in Denver during a brief signing ceremony in the FHS Commons Tuesday, May 16. “I feel the Lord is leading me there,” the 5-foot-10, 185-pound 18-year-old said. “Hopefully I’ll have fun playing ball ... I love it in Colorado.” FHS head coach Tommy Pharr said Cheek “throws three pitches well, fastball, breaking ball and change-up. He locates everything well. Very competitive, and I think he’ll do well there. I think that'll be a good place for him. He’s a great kid.”

With a 9-4 career record entering the Class AAA State Tournament this week, Cheek’s biggest wins at FHS were the 2005 Region 2-AAA Championship against Halls and a 2005 Class AAA State Tournament win against Tullahoma that allowed Farragut to end up third in the state.
