BHS doubles tandem claims AAA state crown
Webb tennis standout Brock claims record fifth straight Division II doubles crown

MURFREESBORO Already confident going into the Class AAA boys tennis doubles state tournament, Bearden head coach Clint Cope wasnt disappointed in his junior-freshman racquet duo.

Junior Hunter Maltsberger and freshman Taylor Patrick, who had never played doubles together before this season, finished 2006 unbeaten (18-0), winning the Class AAA state championship with a 6-3, 6-4 title match sweep of Miles Malloy and Andy Rogers of Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett.

It was a pretty close match, but my guys pulled it through, Cope said. It kinda takes the sting a little bit out of losing that team competition [sectional] against Science Hill].

Maltsberger said, We felt like we should win it, pretty much, we were feeling pretty confident, adding that teaming up with Patrick this season was kinda neat, playing with a left-hander.

Patrick said, We were confident. We just came together and got it done.

As a tandem, Hes like the big man that puts away everything, and Im the little man that runs around, Patrick added.

The Bearden duos first two state matches were a cakewalk. They won easily in the quarterfinals against Michael Hubert and Kory Craighead of Hendersonville, 6-0, 6-2 Wednesday, May 24, before beating Daniel Siller and Jarvis Appleberry of Red Bank, 6-1, 6-0, Thursday, May 25, in Nashville after rain sent the tournament north to Music City before returning to Murfreesboro for the final.

Meanwhile, Webb School senior Berkeley Brock won a state record fifth Division II doubles state crown this year paired with freshman Guinn Garcia as they beat Courtney Pare and Grace Robinette of Girls Preparatory School 6-4, 6-0 in the finals.
