Scrimmages heat up leading to Kick Off Classic
Bearden, Catholic enjoy fast starts in fall seasonís first practice skirmishes

Early dominance was apparent as Knoxville Catholic and Bearden steamrolled their first football scrimmage opponents last week.

The Irish unleashed standout tailback Harrison Smith on Clinton Thursday, Aug. 3, at KCHS, and the seniorís efforts included a 30-yard touchdown after taking a slip-screen pass from junior quarterback Eric Lindsey and getting a key block from junior Mark Kennedy.

Smith scored on a 35-yard TD run capping Catholicís next series, as the KCHS first string scored TDs on its first three possessions.

Meanwhile, Beardenís first string marched for three consecutive touchdowns versus Gibbs during a Friday, Aug. 4, scrimmage at BHS.

After a 19-yard run by junior Torey Works, BHS junior quarterback Dawson Halliday hit senior tight-end Michael Lewis with a 15-yard TD pass.

With the Bulldog defense stiff early on, Halliday found senior wide receiver Zack Jackson for a 40-yard TD pass on a deep lob pass down the middle.

The third drive was all Preston Rouse, as the junior runningback electrified the BHS bench and fans with a 40-yard dump-off pass that featured three broken tackles. Rouse later scored on a 5-yard TD pass from Halliday.
