Grand Jury indicts McMinn County driver in fatality

A Knox County Grand Jury returned indictments Wednesday, Aug. 2, charging Martin Deadrick Smith, 32, of McMinn County with aggravated vehicular homicide and several other related offenses in connection with a fatal accident Sunday, Feb. 19, at Kingston Pike and Campbell Station Road.

A trial date has yet to be set in Division II of Knox County Criminal Court where Judge Ray L. Jenkins will preside over the case.

The collision killed Edward Cates, 31, of Englewood, a passenger in Smith’s 1995 Toyota Tercel. The impact fatally injured Heather R. Paul, 31, of Karns whose 2002 Geo Tracker was struck on the passenger side after Smith’s westbound car allegedly ran a red light.

Also injured was Paul’s daughter, Kaitlin, 4.
