Bearden looks to senior trio

The Bearden Volleydogs hope the senior trio of Caroline Winstel, Rachel Menhinick and Lindsay Granger will deliver a successful season in 2006.

Winstel, who plans on signing with Tusculum College, leads a VolleyDogs team that according to head coach Jennifer Allen has the necessary experience and is solid with its hitting. “Our strength is probably our hitting,” the coach said. “It’s probably as good as it’s been in years.”

Aside from the three seniors, juniors Brittney Basham and Brianna Rittenhouse are the returning starters from last year.

However, Allen is counting on junior Natalie Birdsall to have a solid season as an outside hitter on the starting row.

Despite the experience from the starters, the rest of the team is quite inexperienced. But Winstel doesn’t feel that will be much of an issue this year.

There are only three seniors and a few juniors so it’s a young team,” she said. “But we get the job done.”

As for team goals, Allen is direct. “We are looking to make it to the region tournament at least. ”Menhinick feels that goal will be possible and it will be a successful season if the team relaxes and plays like they know how to play.

“Lots of times teams get stressed out, so I think if we focus on having fun and just playing the game we will do well,” she said.

Winstel also is a believer that this season will turn out well.

“We are going to do really good,” Winstel said. “Last year we worked a lot and got to know each other really well and we got rhythm down.

“Our big strength is our hustle, we never give up and we work really hard and that’s huge for us.”

No matter what happens this season, VolleyDog players said they will do it as a team.

That type of unity is why Granger agrees with the other seniors in saying that this will be a good year for Bearden volleyball.

“We have a lot of new girls and they are looking pretty good this year, so I think we will do pretty well,” Granger said. “We are hoping to grow as a team and do our best.”
