Farragut boys edge ’Dawgs, beat Irish; Lady Ads top BHS

While the Farragut High School girls golf team easily beat archrival Bearden behind a top junior performance, the Bulldog boys took FHS to the wire in a three-way match that also included Knoxville Catholic Thursday, Aug. 17, at Fox Den Country Club.

The Admiral boys held off runner-up BHS by two strokes to win the nine-hole event in a match FHS head coach Mike Driver said was typical in form.

“Usually in high school matches it’s going to come down to the [Nos.] three, four and five players,” Driver said. “Brandon Rodgers [No. 3] had a good round, he shot thirty-seven,” Elliott Wickenden [No. 5] had a thirty-eight, a solid round.

“Davis Bunn, our [No.] four man, he shot forty, but that was able to beat their four man.”

John Heins, BHS head coach, said the Admirals “are probably one of the favorites in the district and the region and to go on to state also, so for us to lose by two, I guess it’s motivating to us. We’re excited about playing better and having a shot to beat Farragut. Their our rivals, these guys look forward to playing Farragut. They’ve had our number the last couple of years.”

Heins said the Bulldogs were led by team No. 1 Harrison Tull’s 35 and No. 2 Jeff Slack’s 38. “The first two guys really played good.”

Minus standout Jillian Brodd, the FHS girls rolled at Fox Den in a dual match with the Lady Bulldogs Heins said lacked stellar individual performances.

Except one according to Driver. “Alyssa [Randolph] played really well, she had eight pars. ... And we were playing from tees that were a little bit longer than for most girls,” he said.
