Strong test at Disney leaves VolleyDogs with 4 wins in 7 matches

A strong showing in the Kaylee Scholarship Association Classic Volleyball Tournament, which is played at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla., has the Bearden VolleyDogs confident heading into district play this week.

The three-day tournament, which ran Aug. 31-Sept. 2, put Bearden, who finished 4-3 in the tournament, to the test with a field of stout competition from across the country.

“The competition was really good, we played some teams that were as good as some college teams around here,” Bearden head coach Jennifer Allen said. “Some of the teams from Arizona were unbelievable and all the west teams were a notch up.”

The VolleyDogs, who enter the week with a 13-5 overall record, opened play with a loss to talented Gilbert High School from Arizona.

“They are supposed to be ranked in the nation,” Allen said. “They were amazing.”

However, Bearden rebounded quickly and notched wins against Cardinal Spellman High School, N.Y. and Florida high schools Miami Senior, Bell and Trinity Christian.

“I think we played pretty well overall,” Allen said. “We were competitive so overall we did well.”

Despite losses to Sabino High School, Ariz. and Florida’s Jamestown High School, Allen was generally pleased.

“We were pretty competitive with Sabino,” Allen said. “Jamestown was the team that we should have beat but we didn’t.”

As for individual standouts, Bearden senior Caroline Winstel played well according to Allen, but teamwork continues to be the number one factor for the successful season thus far.

“Caroline Winstel had a pretty good tournament overall,” the coach said. “But we are fairly successful because everybody gets their jobs done.”

Before heading to Florida for the tournament, the VolleyDogs compiled wins against West Monday, Aug. 28, and Central and Lenoir City Tuesday, Aug. 29.

Bearden opens District 4-AAA play at 6 p.m. today, Thursday, Sept. 7, versus Farragut and William Blount at WBHS.
