Farragut Intermediate School’s Mashburn selected Wal-Mart 2006 ‘Teacher of the Year’

Farragut Intermediate School’s surprise assembly came Wednesday, Sept. 6 — the week preceding National Heroes Day.

But Kay Wellons, the school’s new principal, said there was little question who the pupils’ favorite hero was — Cheryl “Cherry” Mashburn, an FIS career teacher honored as Wal-Mart’s 2006 Teacher of the Year in Tennessee.

In Wal-Mart’s 11th annual such competition, Mashburn was honored during a school-wide awards ceremony held adjacent Farragut Middle School. Mashburn received several awards — plus a $10,000 Wal-Mart check for her school’s use.

Wayne Art, Wal-Mart store co-manager at Turkey Creek, said Mashburn now is eligible to compete with 50 other state winners for national Teacher of the Year.

The Turkey Creek Wal-Mart, managed by Chris Johnson, sponsored her after Dr. Robert W. Frazier, the late FIS principal, had nominated her for Knox County Schools honors last January before his death April 11.

Phi Delta Kappa, the International Education Assoc-iation, chose Mashburn, according to its chairman, for her “contributions to education and her positive impact on students.” She prevailed over 45 other Tennessee nominees.

Representatives from PDK and Wal-Mart attended the assembly and presented Mashburn a $10,000 Wal-Mart educational grant for her school. She also received a personalized Teacher of the Year leather tote, a crystal apple trophy, business cards, a certificate and a year’s PDK membership.

Wal-Mart announced Mash-burn’s selection May 9 as local Teacher of the Year and presented the school $1,000.

Tennessee Education Commis-sioner Lana Seivers represented Gov. Phil Bredesen at the Sept. 6 presentation. Others attending were Knox County School Board member-elect Thomas Deakins, and Farragut Mayor W. Edward “Eddy” Ford III, along with Mashburn’s husband and children.
