BHS wins VolleyDog Challenge pool

With the volleyball season well under way, the Bearden VolleyDogs aren’t slowing down anytime soon. After splitting two games at William Blount — losing to Farragut then beating host WBHS — Bearden hosted their Annual VolleyDog Challenge Saturday. A total of 16 teams played for the win.

Bearden started out the VolleyDog Challenge with wins against Livingston Academy, Halls and Cosby. Their first loss came in the hands of Alcoa 23-25, 24-26, which also took them out of tournament play.

Before heading into their tournament, Bearden first dealt with the Lady Admirals and the Lady Governors.

The VolleyDogs were unable to get the momentum going, losing their first match to the Lady Ads 19-25, 8-25. Natalie Birdsall led Bearden with three points, four kills, one ace and two digs. Briana Rittenhouse also got on the board for the VolleyDogs with two points, three kills and three blocks.

“It started off real slow,” Bearden head coach Jennifer Allen said. “We didn’t pass the ball as well as we needed to and we made a lot of unforced errors early on.”

Bearden and Farragut share a school rival that lives in volleyball as well as other school sports.

“It’s always more heightened,” Allen said. “And sometimes they do things that they don’t normally do and Farragut’s got a great team and they just beat us.”

The game against William Blount went in Bearden’s favor winning both games 25-18, 25-21. The VolleyDogs went on an early run scoring six points to the Lady Governors’ one point. For the VolleyDogs, Lindsay Granger tallied eight points, two kills, two aces and two assists, while teammate Caroline Winstel scored two points and had nine kills and two aces.

“They performed better in the first game,” Allen said. “They still made a lot of mistakes and they weren’t as sharp as they needed to be.”
