Newby, Gilmartin led FHS cross country success

After winning the annual Cherokee Boulevard meet Saturday, Sept. 2, among a 28-team field led by freshman Alex Newby’s third-place finish (19:50), the Farragut Lady Admirals cross country team took fourth among 13 teams in the Powerade Invitational in Chattanooga Saturday, Sept. 9.

And it was Newby again near the top of a 132-girl field, finishing second (19:10). “She’s a true competitor,” FHS assistant coach Kellie Ivens said. Margo Sneed (16th) and Sarah Brinson (18th) rounded out the FHS Powerade top 25.

At Cherokee, Brinson was eighth followed by Margo Sneed (16th).

Meanwhile, the FHS boys collected a pair of third-place finishes at Cherokee and Chattanooga, led by Tom Gilmartin’s second-place effort at Cherokee (16:21 among 324 finishers), followed by a fourth-place effort at the Powerade Invitational (16:39).

“A real good race for him,” Ivens said of Gilmartin.

At Cherokee, Chris Wright was seventh followed by Thomas Fraser (23rd) and Michael McCormick’s (24). In Chattanooga, Wright was again seventh followed by McCormick finishing 21st.
