Thornton, FHS golf girls hot despite first setback

Medalist among an eight team field during the annual Warren County Invitational in McMinnville Tuesday, Sept. 5, Farragut High senior golfer Erika Thornton is on her game.

“She’s playing really well lately,” FHS head coach Mike Driver said of Thornton, who shot a 72 for 18 holes.

Combined with teammate Jillian Brodd’s 78, the Lady Ads won the team title at 150.

Thornton was also low scorer at Green Meadow Country Club in a match versus Maryville Thursday, Sept. 7, firing a one-under-par 35 for nine holes. Junior teammate Alyssa Randolph fired a 37 as FHS won going away.

Baylor finally cooled off the Lady Ads, breaking a 23-match win streak and handing FHS its first loss Saturday, Sept. 9, at Kahite Gold Club in Tellico Village (143 versus 150). Randolph “played real well” Driver said, shooting a team low 74 for 18 holes.

FHS BOYS

The FHS boys (37-10-1 record entering the week) took second at McMinnville among a 12-team field led by Michael Reeves, who tied for fifth overall (75) followed by Davis Bunn (77), John Minor (79 ) and Hayden Anderson (80).

An FHS split squad traveled to Beaver Brook and defeated Powell and Gibbs, led by Jordan Stridde’s 36 followed by Drew Jenkins’ 37.

Perhaps the Admirals’ top team effort came at Green Meadow Sept. 7, as FHS shot three-under-par to beat MHS. Reeves led with a 34 followed by Brandon Rodgers (35), and Minor, Anderson and Elliott Wickenden (each at 36).
