College fair offered

The Smoky Mountain Counseling Association, Knox County high school counselors, and The University of Tennessee have joined forces to provide high school students with a great college preparation

Representatives will host the 15th Smoky Mountain Regional College and Career Fair from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 12.

More than 100 college representatives from the surrounding region will gather at The University of Tennessee Carolyn P. Brown Student Center, said Leigh Ann Campbell, coordinator for the event and Education Specialist at UT.

“The fair offers students the opportunity to follow up on ideas about where they want to be after high school graduation,” Campbell said.

College representatives will be on hand to assist high school students with questions about college life and preparations they can take to make the transition from high school to college an easier one, Campbell said.

The Smoky Mountain Counseling Association will award a minimum of three $500 scholarships through a random drawing for qualifying seniors. Students who are seniors can pick up an application form for the scholarship from their high school guidance counselor, Campbell said.

“For students looking to transfer to a two-year college this is a great chance to find out what classes will transfer and ask questions,” Campbell said.

Small universities, technical schools, beauty schools and large universities will all be represented.

Last year more than 500 students attended the fair, Campbell said.

“Lots of information is available online, but many times students have questions about a specific campus, program major or about available scholarships,” Campbell said. “Having the chance to talk to an admissions representative face-to-face can resolve issues that can’t be answered online or through printed admissions materials.”

Free parking will be available in G10 garage on The University of Tennessee campus.
