Fruit sale benefits FHS marching band

The Farragut High School Marching Band will begin its annual fruit sale fund-raiser Monday, October 23.

The sale usually brings in about $40,000 a year, one-third of the band’s operating budget, said Ron Rogers, director of the FHS marching band.

“It’s an expensive endeavor,” Rogers said. “Knox County gives schools about seven hundred and fifty dollars to support the band and the rest is accumulated through fund-raising.”

Band members will gather together on “Blitz Day,” Saturday, Oct. 28 and parents will drive them from house to house in the Farragut area to sell the fruit, said Michael Murphy, chairman of food sales for the FHS marching band.

The fruit includes tangelos, juice oranges, naval oranges and grapefruit, from RiverSweet Citrus Groves in Central Florida, Murphy said.

“This is really some of the freshest fruit you can buy,” Murphy said. “It is picked three days before it is shipped to us.”

The band will receive the fruit Friday, Dec. 8, and will then deliver it to buyers within the following days, Murphy said.

Money that is raised through fruit sales will go to support transportation, horn repair, instruction, uniforms and other expenses, Murphy said.

“They work hard at preparing the music,” Murphy said. “It teaches responsibility and fundamentals they use for years to come.”

Musicians are required to pay a $300 fee for participation in the marching band, and some of the money brought in by fruit sales can also offset this fee for some students, Murphy said.

“They are fantastic musicians and they work hard at what they do,” Murphy said. “This is an opportunity to let the students earn their own way.”

Murphy would like to see students bring in enough money to provide a surplus of funds that could be used toward the following year’s expenses.
