Webb clips St. Benedict

The Webb Spartans overcame another hurdle Friday when they plucked the St. Benedict Eagles 31-14, ensuring the team a place in the division playoffs (2-2 record in Division II play, 5-3 overall).

“Tom Ergen ran the ball very well from the fullback position,” Webb head coach Dave Meske said. “He was replacing Chad Manning. He had twenty-three carries for something like a hundred and twenty-nine yards [and one touchdown].

“Brandt Campbell made a game-changing interception and ran it in for a touchdown,” Meske added. “We were ahead and he caught it and ran it in. That sort of opened up the game.”

As a team, the Spartans made 18 first downs as opposed to the Eagles’ 10. Webb rushed for 360 yards on 57 carries while the Eagles flew for only 180 yards on 28 carries.

Quarterback Blake Beeler carried eight times for 76 yards.

Bo Johnson had nine carries for 70 yards for two touchdowns — and two interceptions defensively.

Campbell also had four carries for 25 yards. Derek Boyce added 35 yards rushing.
