Korean businessman sees thriving business grow

Farragut residents may soon have the opportunity to play outdoor sports such as soccer or roller hockey even in frigid winter months.

The Icearium, 110 Watt Road, began work on a $2.5-million expansion project which, when completed, would offer sports enthusiasts outdoor sports opportunities on an indoor field.

Facility manager Tyler Skelton said the expansion adds a new dynamic to the Icearium.

“We’re expanding so that it’s not just an ice facility,” Skelton said. “We want to be able to offer other sports, such as lacrosse or soccer.”

He said the new addition would be about 40,000 square feet and include indoor fields, which can be used for soccer, lacrosse, in-line hockey and volleyball.

“We’ll have one field that will be used for soccer most of the time,” Skelton said. “The other field will be a sport court. It can be used for in-line hockey or have turf pulled over it for another sport.”

The addition of the soccer field and the sport court is expected to add to the customer base that flocks to the Icearium.

“We didn’t want to do just ice sports,” Skelton said. “We wanted to get people interested in ice sports, but we wanted to have other sports to bring them here.”

In order to bring in more customers and fill in the void left when other local indoor sports arenas closed, he said the Icearium had to change to attract new customers. The addition will be a mirror image of the existing facility, he said.

The new addition brings with it a new name for the Icearium. Skelton said it would be called the Icearium-Cool Sports

“When my father started many years ago, he started with the name Cool Sports,” Skelton said.

The new facility is being built by Construction Plus.

“They built our original building and we were happy with their work,” he said. “We’re expecting to have the work done by February.”
