FHS volleyball earns 4th state trip in five years with sectional win

The Lady Admirals are going to state — again.

The Farragut volleyball team battled through Karns (34-16) and Maryville (36-10) in the Region 2-AAA semifinals and region championships, respectively, Tuesday, Oct. 17, to obtain a sectional home game.

At home, the Lady Ads (48-9) faced Morristown East (37-13) Thursday, Oct. 19, to secure their fourth trip to Murfreesboro in five years for the Class AAA state tournament.

It took Farragut four games before they knew they needed to pack their bags. The Lady Ads won the match after falling to the Lady ’Canes in the first game (22-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-20).

“It’s exciting,” Farragut head coach David Moore said. “A little bit of a relief because they were a lot of high expectations for this team too. ... We obviously had to earn it tonight. Morristown East played a great match. I’m just proud as I can be of them. It’s a great team effort.”

FHS began state play Wednesday, Oct. 25, running through Friday’s “final four” round after round-robin pool play.

Against MEHS, The Lady Ads seemed to come alive in the third game, securing the lead with a 10-point win. Standout outside hitter Kelsey Benorden showed her strength in the fourth with five spikes, one the game point, a block and ace. “It’s a perfect ending for a senior year,” Benorden said.

Benorden led with 22 kills, three aces and five blocks. Amanda Mitchell tallied 19 kills and three blocks, Lindsey West had 30 assists and 15 service points and Eden Watts recorded six kills. “It feels amazing,” said Watts, a senior. “It’s so much better this year because I’m a senior.”

As for state, West knows it’s not going to be easy. “We’re just going to practice our hardest,” she said. “We kind of are prepared from last year, knowing what teams are there and how to prepare ourselves. ... be ready to give it our all.”

Two days prior, FHS defeated Maryville in the region semifinals at MHS after the Lady Rebels broke FHS’s 70-game 4-AAA winning streak in the district tourney. It took the Lady Ads five games to beat Karns in the region finals.
