No. 1 Irish stay perfect, rout Yellowjackets 28-7

Knoxville Catholic remains unbeaten and No. 1 in the state in Class 3A after running all over Kingston 28-7 Friday, Oct. 20, at Catholic’s Blaine Stadium.

With 403 yards rushing on 46 carries, the Irish put up some impressive numbers on the ground, but four fumbles including three that were lost left Catholic head coach Mark Pemberton a little concerned.

“We can’t turn it over like that,” the coach said. “That was not a typical night for us right there.”

Despite the three turnovers, there were still bright spots for the Irish (9-0 overall, 5-0 in Region 3-2A) Senior standout Harrison Smith rushed for 192 yards on 18 carries and senior Brian Hartmann had 100 yards on 14 carries.

“I told them that if you win games like that you have a chance to be pretty good, so our kids battled through it and still had a pretty good win,” Pemberton said.

Smith got the Irish scoring started with a 93-yard touchdown run with 2:38 left in the first quarter. After a Jacob Giles fumble recovery, a Hartmann 9-yard run made it 14-0 with 2:19 left in the first quarter.

Kingston’s best chance of scoring came at the end of the first half, but the Irish defense stood tall. “The defense made a great stop at the end of the first half,” Pemberton said. “The defense has been playing well all year so the offense sort of got us in trouble tonight.”

A Michael Browder 40-yard touchdown run gave the Irish a 20-7 lead with 3:07 left. Hartmann found the end zone with 9:31 left in the game, making it 28-7.

Injury update: Senior Joey Natour left the game with an undisclosed arm injury in the first half. “I don’t really know for sure yet, it’s his arm,” Pemberton said. “He plays every snap for us on both sides of the ball so that would be a huge loss. He is a heck of a kid too.”
