Catholic volleyball team inches short of state title

Knoxville Catholic volleyball head coach Mike Jones talked about “a couple of inches” that was the difference in a Class A/AA state crown versus finishing second.

A pair of Jessica Lane kill attempts barely missed the mark after the Lady Irish rallied from an 11-5 deficit in game five to tie Notre Dame 12-12 (first one to 15 ahead by two wins) in the deciding game of the best of five state championship match at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro Friday, Oct. 27.

Those shots that barely missed were the final two Notre Dame points in a 16-14 game five NDHS victory to seal the state crown.

Catholic’s season ends with a 44-9 overall record.

Lane, a middle hitter, and Karen Wolf, outside hitter, were named to the All-tournament team.

“The girls really fought hard, I’m proud of them,” Jones said.

The Lady Irish went 2-1 in a three-match pool play, beating Donelson Christian Academy and University School of Jackson in three games while losing to Notre Dame in that round in four game.s.

Greenbrier, the other pool’s top team, fell to the Lady Irish in the state semifinal 25-21, 25-18, 25-20.
