Tennessee hire vets

Tennesseeís veteran population is approximately one-half million. Of that population more than 35,000 utilize the services of the stateís Tennessee Career Centers each year.

It is important for Tennesseans to recognize the contributions of our nationís veterans and realize the benefits of hiring veterans. Together with a national initiative, Governor Phil Bredesen has proclaimed November as Hire Vets First Month.

I am pleased the governor has dedicated this month to our veterans. Tennesseeís veteransí program is the best in the southeast United States and one of the best programs in the country. In fiscal year 2005, 66 percent of veterans seeking our services entered employment.

Our staff offers a one-on-one approach in matching employer needs with veterans to make the transition from military to civilian work a little easier. Our services include employment-related testing, training information, skills assessment, assistance with job referral and job search techniques and local job market information. From engineers to clerk typists, we have helped veterans transition into many careers.

Research indicates executives and managers who have served in the military do a better job and stay longer in their positions than those who havenít. And employers say character traits like leadership, integrity and respectfulness are what

set former soldiers apart from other job

candidates.

There are many reasons to consider hiring a veteran for your team. Veterans are a tremendous resource for all Tennessee employers. They are real-world tested and can greatly enhance your organizationís

productivity.

In honor of Hire Vets First Month the Tennessee Career Centers will be offering open houses during November to showcase the services we offer. The schedule is posted on our Web site at www.tennessee.

You may also find out more information about Hire Vets First on the federal Web site that assists veterans with employment information. The Web address is www.hirevetsfirst.gov.

This month and throughout the year I encourage Tennessee employers to learn the benefits of hiring veterans as they bring their experience and their dedication to our country, to the workplace.
